JUBA Authentic Jonathan Isaac Jersey , May 11 (Xinhua) -- South Sudan's sacked army chief generalPaul Malong is harmless and has not rebelled against thegovernment, said senior officials on Thursday.

The Minister of Defence Kuol Manyang told Xinhua in Juba thatthey were in contact with the former General Chief of Staff, whoupon being relieved by President Salva Kiir from his job onTuesday, quietly retreated with a convoy of soldiers to his home ofAweil, northwest of the capital, causing public fear and anxietyabout his next move.

""He (Malong) is not in the bush. It was when he was removed fromoffice that he went away (to Aweil) but he has not done yet anyharm or damage,"" Manyang told Xinhua.

""We are already talking to him. He is with the governor ofEastern Lakes state and he will be coming today,"" he added.

The former army chief, who has been replaced by General JamesAjongo, was until his sacking a confidant and loyalist of PresidentKiir whose tenure at the helm of the South Sudan army (SPLA) wascharacterized by mass exodus of senior officers accusing the laterof favouring officers from his Dinka ethnic group.

Malong's leadership at SPLA had hugely become notorious duringcounter insurgency operations against rebels in Equatoria and UpperNile region amid accusations of civilian killings, rape, lootingand indiscipline which analysts say could have caused hisouster.

He also played a huge role in the renewed July clash of 2016that ousted and forced into exile former first vice President RiekMachar having vowed prior to signing of the 2015 peace deal not toblock the rebel leader's return to the now transitional unitygovernment.

South Sudan descended into violence in December 2013 afterpolitical dispute between President Kiir and his former deputyMachar led to fighting that pitied mostly Dinka ethnic soldiersloyal to Kiir against Machar's Nuer ethnic group.

The 2015 peace agreement to end the violence was again violatedin July 2016 when the rival factions resumed fighting in thecapital forcing the rebel leader Machar to flee into exile.
